East Lindsey district prepares to launch its new weekly food waste collection service.

Weekly food waste collections to begin across East Lindsey

Residents across East Lindsey are being reminded to look out for important information arriving through their letterboxes as the district prepares to launch its new weekly food waste collection service.

Food waste collections will begin across East Lindsey from the week commencing Monday 19 October, giving households a new way to recycle food waste every week.

In the next couple of weeks, every household will receive a welcome letter with their new collection calendar on the reverse and an updated Right Thing, Right Bin leaflet, providing all the information residents need ahead of the new service starting.

Residents are being urged to check their new collection calendar carefully when it arrives, as collection days may have changed. Please do not share calendars as these are property specific.

As part of preparations for the introduction of food waste collections, East Lindsey District Council has carried out a full review of its waste and recycling collection rounds. This means some households may find that their usual collection day has changed.

Residents should follow the dates shown on their new calendar, from week commencing 19 October, rather than relying on their previous collection pattern.

There are no changes to garden waste collections, and residents should continue to present their garden waste on their existing confirmed collection day

Food waste will be collected every week, alongside one of residents’ other scheduled waste or recycling collections.

Most households have already received their food waste caddy pack, which includes a small indoor caddy, a larger outdoor caddy and an initial roll of liners.

Residents are reminded not to start using their caddies until the week before their first collection and to check their new calendar to find out when their service begins.

Arrangements are also being finalised for residents living in flats and other properties with communal waste facilities. As previously agreed with residents, managing agents and landlords where appropriate, food waste caddies and containers will be delivered to communal areas before collections begin.

Any household that should have received an individual caddy pack but has not yet received one should report at Report Food Caddy Issue - East Lindsey District Council.

Councillor Martin Foster, Portfolio Holder for Operational Services at East Lindsey District Council, said: “We are now just a few weeks away from launching weekly food waste collections across East Lindsey and a huge amount of work has taken place behind the scenes to prepare for this significant change to our waste service.

“Residents will shortly receive everything they need to get ready, including their new collection calendar. I would particularly encourage everyone to check this carefully when it arrives, as following a full review of our collection rounds, some households may have a change to their usual collection day.

“Separating food waste may be a new habit for many of us, but it is a simple change that can make a real difference. Food collected through the new service will be recycled through anaerobic digestion and used to produce renewable energy and fertiliser.

“I would like to thank residents for their support as we prepare to introduce the service, and we will continue to provide information and guidance to help everyone make the change.”

Residents can use their food waste caddies for a wide range of food, including fruit and vegetable peelings, plate scrapings, meat and fish including bones, dairy products, bread, rice, pasta, tea bags, coffee grounds and leftover pet food.

The outdoor food waste caddy should be presented for collection each week on the day shown on the household’s new collection calendar. Residents should present their caddy next to their bin. Householders are encouraged to put their house number/name on the outdoor caddy so it is easily identifiable.

More information about the new service, including frequently asked questions and guidance on using food waste caddies, is available on the East Lindsey District Council website.
